Projects: Insulation - Overhead

With some projects, after finishing, cleaning up, and putting everything away, one can't tell by looking that you spent most of a day plus sore muscles doing anything. And then one hopes that it makes an improvement!

Today, we worked on insulation.

Merganser is actually fairly well insulated with 3/8 - 1/2 inch closed cell foam that has been glued to most interior services of the hull and overhead (from the bilge up). We've been thinking about adding more in some places, to bring it out to about an 1 inch, as we've got some places where there is a 1/2 inch gap that we could fill. So ... after this past week of freezing weather, we thought why not add some now? Why not indeed?

So, we started with the overhead: removing screws and taking down the cedar planks, adding two layers of Reflectix Insulation (aluminum covered bubble wrap), then putting the cedar planks back up. 5 hours later, no one can tell we made any changes. And we've probably guaranteed that the outside temperatures won't drop below 45 degrees for the rest of the winter.

BTW - we thought about using aluminum coated foam board, but figured this was a little easier to use, and bring back to the boat in the car in the snowing weather. We've also had good results using this in and around the icebox in our former boat.

Pictures follow:

The blue tape is to help hold it up until the planking is back on.
