Project: Dinghy Sailing Rig Transom

The idea of PIPPI and LONGSTOCKING was not only to have two sailing dinghies that could stack together (one on top of the other), but also be able to attach end to end (transom to transom) to make a larger dinghy. How does one attach rudder hardware in such a way as to allow all this to happen?

Well, first one makes up one's mind as to where to cut down the transom to finish it off. You might have noticed that last season's photos of these dinghies had transoms that stuck above the gunnels. We cut them down this year, and added a sculling notch to each. In the first photo, if you look closely, you might notice that the bottom dinghy (the overturned one) had yet to be trimmed down.

Then we worked out how to attach each rudder. We like using hardware store solutions (when possible) on dinghies and small boats. So we decided upon eye-bolts. If we placed these just so, then maybe we could also use them to help hold PIPPI and LONGSTOCKING together when the time came for that, too. This meant cutting a notch out of each transom (turned out to be the depth of the plywood), as J. was doing here.

First we used the router (first photo) then cleaned it up with a chisel.
