Our Trip Back East for a Wedding: Part 2 - I.'s Pictures

26 September - 1 October, 2013

(This is part Two, the Photos: the F’s garden, architecture, etc. that I. found interesting to shoot with her camera. Part one contains narrative. Ok, so this one contains narrative, too, and not all the photos were taken by I. - although most were taken with her camera.)

The photos are organized by day:

  • Friday - mainly garden shots
  • Saturday - wedding and reception
  • Sunday - Brunch and day-long gathering (brass band, foosball, etc.)
  • Monday - Exploring Beverly, Salem and Marblehead

Friday

We flew in and helped prepare things for the rehearsal and wedding.

I. was quite intrigued by the F's garden. She really likes taking shots of flowers. KF's garden was still fabulous this late in the season. Plus, they had some "Japanese" lanterns with a nice tent in the back yard. The lanterns had solar lights, really cool!

Saturday - the Wedding ...

SD with his parents (BD and BD), getting ready to seat his mother and father.

Pr and Pl getting ready to seat the Mother of the Bride (their mother, KF). These two photos are a little blurry (an emotional shaking hand, perhaps? Probably just the light tricking the lens), but we sure like the expressions on their faces.

Cousin E preparing to walk down the aisle with one of the groomsmen.

J and the Father of the Bride (GF) waiting expectantly.

The new Mr. and Mrs. S and LD kissing on their way down the aisle.

The new Mrs. LD with E, I, and M and ...

... J, the new Mr. and Mrs. L and SD.

Mr. and Mrs. S and LD posing with our family after the wedding: L, I, J, LD, SD, M and E.

The following shots are of LD's train prior to being bustled, and during the process. I and M had never seen this done before, and were quite intrigued (as was "little" brother Pr).

Departing to the Reception!

At the reception, we await the couple's arrival.

J and Aunt AF catch up while Opa looks for the couple.
And they arrive! The new Mr. and Mrs. L and SD.

The Parents of the Bride (GF and KF) make a warm and touching greeting and thank you. What a special occasion to see all people who have shaped the lives of LF and SD as they have come together to form a new family. A new journey starts for them, as LD and SD. We wish them all the best!

After eating, we dance into the night.

Sunday Brunch and Hang Out Time:

Pr's new-to-him tuba.

Pr and his mom (KF) playing a piece (short video below).

Just prior to leaving on their honeymoon, we snapped a photo of
the new Mr. and Mrs. S & LD with J, Pl and L.

J and L continue to marvel how these little grade school kids (when we left) have grown into such marvelous compassionate adults.

Meanwhile, back inside, the brass instruments continue to be played. I is trying to play the French horn with a tuba mouth piece - they find it doesn't work, but sure is funny!

The French horn was Opa's (?), which he brought from Germany. Uncle H played it, and how Pr is "keeping watch" over it (minus mouth piece).

Of course, I, E, and M have to try playing the tuba!

Mind you, while E has been playing trombone for 2 years (starting his 3rd), the girls have just picked up their instruments (French horn and trumpet). At this point, they can each play 3 to 4 notes. But that doesn't stop Pr from giving some instruction, and organizing everyone into a brass band (with piano).

Pl even picks up the trumpet for a bit.

And they start to jam!

Oma enjoying the show!

The next thing we know, not only did Pr have the kids all organized playing the brass instruments (and piano), but he gets them playing "Hey, Jude."

 Uncle H & Aunt A, J & L, KF & GF

After, and between, the jam sessions, there was foosball!

Monday:
a day of exploring where L and J used to live and some of the sights ...

L and J's old apartment, B.C. (Before Children). We lived on the second story during our 2nd and 3rd year of our marriage. J was attending grad-school in Boston, and L was teaching.

Independence Park, Beverly: GF keeps his sailboat on a mooring buoy just off the beach. We remember rowing out to it from here many a time.

Pacific Ocean kids getting to play in the Atlantic!

From Beverly, we're off to Salem ... with a pit stop at the Salem Public Library.

Do you notice how we just can't stay away from these libraries?

L and J lived in the middle apartment of this building the first year they were married. Still looks the same.

After exploring the cemetery in front of the bus, we then noticed the organization who used the bus.

We thought it ironic that the Salem Council of Aging not only kept their van here, but used the building adjacent to the cemetery. Nothing like reminding oneself of one's own mortality.

Do you notice that the windows curve in this house, too? L and J were happy to see that they hadn't changed them since we lived up the street.

After looking at the old houses and the cemetery  (and where J and L used to live in Salem), we drove over to Marblehead.

Some of the trees were right in the midst of changing colors. We were a little too early for the full fall effect, but enough to get a taste of what is to come.

And a reminder of how narrow some of these old streets are.

L and J then decided that maybe we needed to eat more than snacks. How about "Lunner"? Lunner is like Brunch - only between lunch and dinner, right? When we spied "Brothers" in Salem, we pulled in and stopped. L used to teach in Peabody, and Brothers Restaurants were owned by the family of one of her former students. Since that time, the restaurants have changed hands, but L couldn't resist ordering a lobster roll!

From the parking lot, J spied masts. (Leave it to J to see boats everywhere.) So, we left the car (we just were customers, right?) and walked the few blocks to the Salem Maritime National Historic Site. Of course they were closed (it was after 5 by then) but we enjoyed looking around.

When we were living in Salem, the FRIENDSHIP was being built. So it was fun to see how things ended up (even if she's missing her mizzen top-masts). It looked like they were in the shed, so we wondered if the Park Service was working on maintenance, or repairs.

Then we drove back to Beverly, visited with the Fs some more before returning to our hotel and departing the following morning.

Thus ends our wonderful trip back to Beverly, Mass.
